The Age To Start Questioning The Answer

Children this age are handed an enormous amount of information and very little training in deciding what to believe. That skill is teachable, and this is the right moment to teach it.

What changes

What Grades 5โ€“6 works on

Written as things you would actually notice at home, not as skills on a certificate.

  • Asks where a claim came from before repeating it
  • Argues a position and changes it when the evidence goes the other way
  • Uses an AI tool for a task and can say what it got wrong
  • Works in a team where the roles are not assigned by an adult

The kind of work

What a project looks like

Illustrative of how sessions run rather than a fixed syllabus. The problems change so the thinking has to travel.

  • 01

Investigating a claim that sounds true and finding out whether it is

  • 02

Building something with an AI tool, then finding its mistakes

  • 03

Presenting a case to a group that starts out disagreeing

Questions

What parents of Grades 5โ€“6 children ask

Are children using AI tools directly?

Where age-appropriate and supervised, yes. The aim is judgement rather than avoidance. Our approach to this is set out in the AI Use Policy.

Is this a coding class?

No. Some projects involve technology and some do not. The subject is thinking, and the tools change.

How is this different from the Glimmers App?

The App builds everyday practice on a child's own time. Labs put that practice into a room with other children and a facilitator, where it has to survive contact with other people.
