AIQ Challenge ยท Grades 1โ€“2

A First Challenge, Built For Six-Year-Olds

At this age a competition should feel like an interesting afternoon, not an exam. Challenges are visual and spoken, and no child is disadvantaged for reading slowly.

At this level

What Grades 1โ€“2 are asked to do

The capabilities are the same across every band. How they are put to a child is not.

  • Noticing what is odd or interesting about something
  • Explaining a choice out loud, in their own words
  • Trying a second idea when the first does not work

Questions

What parents of Grades 1โ€“2 students ask

Does my child need to read well to take part?

No. Challenges at this level are visual and spoken. Reading fluency is not what is being measured.

Is this too competitive for a six-year-old?

The format at this band is built to be enjoyable rather than pressured. Children are not ranked against each other publicly.
